The Journey of Building Chai Shai

January 30, 2025|Founders Talk

Challenges, Triumphs, and Creating a Culture of Support

Starting a business has never been a simple task. As the founder of Chai Shai Café, I’ve learned this truth firsthand. The road to building this small, family-owned café has been full of challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons. But what has stood out the most in this journey is the importance of empathy, understanding, and a supportive community. It’s a reminder that small businesses don’t just need customers; they need a culture of support that helps them grow and thrive.

The Importance of Empathy in Supporting Small Businesses

As small business owners, we often face the weight of the world on our shoulders. Every decision, every step we take affects not just the business but also our families and the people who depend on us. With the rise of social media and instant feedback, it’s easy for critics to voice their opinions, often without fully understanding the complexities that go into running a business.

That’s why, as a business owner, I always encourage empathy from others. Before publicly criticizing a business, I believe it’s important to first reach out to the owner directly. Share your concerns, offer constructive feedback, and have a conversation. We, as small business owners, are constantly learning, adapting, and improving, and sometimes hearing from our customers is the best way to do that. Public criticism without understanding can be discouraging, but when we take the time to communicate thoughtfully, we build a culture of support, not one of negativity.

What I've Learned from My Amazing Team

One of the most incredible lessons I’ve learned throughout this journey is from the dedicated team behind Chai Shai Café. Every morning, they come in early to ensure we’re ready for the day ahead. They prep, they organize, and they prepare not just food, but experiences for our customers. Our team’s commitment to delivering quality is unmatched, and it’s something I deeply appreciate.

We take our time to craft each product, and this process is central to everything we do. It’s not about rushing to get more customers through the door; it’s about delivering a high-quality experience. We educate our customers about the chai-making process - explaining the love and care that goes into every cup. The chai at Chai Shai is not just a drink; it’s a journey, inspired by my own childhood memories growing up in India. My husband, Vivek, and I curated the chai base, using flavors and techniques that were passed down to us. Each sip is a reminder of home, of family, and of tradition.

At Chai Shai, we’ve always chosen quality over quantity. We believe that creating something meaningful is far more important than trying to serve as many people as possible. That’s why we’re so proud of the menu we’ve curated - it’s more than just food and drink; it’s a reflection of our roots.

How the Chai Shai Menu Was Curated

When we set out to create Chai Shai’s menu, we didn’t just pick dishes at random. It was a deeply personal process for both me and Vivek. Our childhoods in India shaped every decision we made. The food and chai pairings on our menu are a reflection of our upbringing, and they’ve been carefully selected to offer the most authentic and nostalgic flavors.

One of my personal favorites - and a best seller at Chai Shai - is the Malai Toast. As a child, I used to enjoy Malai Toast during my middle school years, and it always reminded me of simple yet delightful moments. I wanted to recreate that experience for our customers, and seeing how much they enjoy it warms my heart every single day.

This menu isn’t just about food; it’s about storytelling. Each item has its own history, its own significance, and it’s my honor to share that with everyone who walks through our doors.

From Bootstrap to Million-Dollar Success

When we first opened Chai Shai Café, we had no external investors or large capital backing us up. We started with nothing but a dream and the will to make it a reality. It’s been a journey of scaling from zero to a million-dollar business - all while remaining bootstrapped. We’ve faced setbacks, learned from our mistakes, and adjusted along the way. But we’ve never lost sight of the vision we set for ourselves from the beginning: to bring authentic Indian chai and snacks to the community.

Scaling a business is never easy, especially when you start with limited resources. But every challenge we faced has made us stronger and more determined. We focused on doing things the right way, on creating something meaningful, and on never compromising on quality.

A Truly Family-Owned Business with a Woman Entrepreneur at the Helm

Chai Shai Café is truly a family affair. It’s not just me and Vivek, but also the incredible team we’ve built around us. Every person who works at Chai Shai is like family. And as a woman entrepreneur, I’m especially proud to lead this business and continue empowering women, not only within my team but also in the community we serve.

In addition to the hard work we put in every day, we’ve also embraced technology to help automate and streamline our operations. From optimizing our ordering system to managing our inventory, technology has allowed us to scale without losing the personal touch that makes Chai Shai so special.

Closing Thoughts

Building Chai Shai Café has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. Through it all, I’ve learned that empathy, understanding, and support are key to not just surviving, but thriving. As small business owners, we face daily hurdles, but when we create a culture of empathy and open communication, we can overcome anything.

To all the small business owners out there, I want to say: your journey matters. And to all of you who have supported us - thank you. You are the reason we continue to grow and succeed. Together, let’s continue building a world where small businesses feel supported, understood, and appreciated.

Let’s keep this culture of support alive!
